Lean Engineering Principles and Application

Lean Manufacturing strives to improve efficiency and reduce waste on the manufacturing floor.  Lean Engineering strives to improve efficiency and reduce waste for the design workflow.

While Lean Manufacturing is a somewhat established field, Lean Engineering is not.  It is a nascent field, born out of the migration of hugely successful Lean Manufacturing techniques into the entire organization.

Our belief is that Lean can and will be a profound force in improving embedded design engineering.  There is no doubt, however, that applying Lean to Engineering work is one of the most difficult, confounding, and frustrating applications imaginable.

The contradictions are staggering.  While Lean deals with standard work, Engineering produces bespoke work.  Lean creates predictable, regular work flow, while Engineering work is unpredictable.  Lean work is linear, but Engineering is iterative.  Finally, while Lean focuses on measurement, Engineering work appears fundamentally un-measureable.

It is possible that no other business area has the same challenges as Engineering does.  And yet Engineering - like every other aspect of the business - is constantly under pressure to do more with less.

We have the Lean Engineering expertise necessary to break the impasse.  Not only have we studied the Lean principles extensively, we have put them into practical application in real-life design environments.  We have created and applied Lean Engineering techniques tailor-made to the needs of individual organizations to provide real, tangible, and measurable improvements.
